Quick Start Guide

Getting Started with Digital Scenery

Using digital scenery is easier than you think and we’re here to guide you every step of the way. In this quick-start guide, you’ll learn how to download our software, access your content, and make sure you have the necessary equipment.

Before you begin, you'll want to find out if you have access to the essential gear to run digital scenery. You will need:

  • A Display Surface: A screen or surface where your digital scenery will appear during the live performance. Ex: cyclorama, painted flats, or even a light colored wall
  • A Computer: A laptop or desktop to run our software that meets the minimum specifications found in this guide
  • An Output Device: This could be a projector (most common), an LED wall, or even a TV!

Not quite sure what this all means? No problem! We'll explain everything in the sections below.

Step 1: Explore your options

Broadway Media has 2 options for digital scenery, review your options and decide which is best for your production!

Option 1: Scenic Projections

Scenic Projections are script-accurate show packages that feature beautifully animated scenery created from the author's vision and intent. Every scene, setting, and magical moment in the show is included and is meticulously crafted to bring the show to life on your stage. Start by browsing the Scenic Projections available for your show. You can preview every scene and setting included in the package directly on our website by logging in with your free Broadway Media account.

Note: While most of our customers choose the Standard Package, we also offer a Professional Package designed for those using QLab. For more information about our Professional Package, click here: Professional Package

Option 2: Backdrops Library

The Backdrops Library allows you to customize your own projections package by choosing your own backdrops from our extensive collection to suit your creative vision. Whether Scenic Projections aren’t available for the title you’re producing, or you’re looking to fully customize your production, the Backdrops Library has over 3,000+ backdrops to choose from. Search by shows, themes, events, or enter a search term to find the perfect drops for your vision.

Equipment

Computer Requirements

To run StagePlayer smoothly, you’ll need a computer that meets these minimum specs:

For PC:

  • Windows 11 or better,
  • Intel Pentium 4 processor with SSE2 or equivalent and ≥2.0 GHz

  • 10GB available disk space plus an additional 5GB per rental

For Mac:

iPad

ChromeBook

Lenovo ThinkPad and Lenovo IdeaPad

HP ProBook

Microsoft Surface

Acer Nitro 5 Intel Laptop

Any device with an Iris Graphics Card

Output Device

We advise all our Theatre-Makers to use Ultra Short-Throw Projectors with a minimum of 5,000 lumens. These projectors are designed to produce large, bright images from a very short distance, helping to eliminate shadows and keep your visuals crisp and clear.

Note: Alternatively, you can use an LED wall or even a television.

Cabling:

When you are connecting your computer to the projector it is important that you use the shortest distance possible between the two pieces of equipment, as this minimizes system failure. We recommend a high-speed HDMI cable (gold-plated) that isn't longer than 50 feet. If it is necessary to connect your devices over a distance longer than 50ft, it is possible, but we recommend additional hardware, like a CAT6 cable with HDMI adapters on each end versus a longer HDMI cable.

Projection Surface:

If you will be projecting from the front as seen in the image below, there are a variety of surfaces you can use. A cyclorama, painted flats, or even a light colored wall would be a good choice.

If you will be projecting from the back as seen in the following image, you’ll need to use a semi-translucent screen so that the light can pass through.

Tips and Tricks

Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks for maximizing your projections:

Adjust Downstage Lighting

Keeping your lights downstage will prevent interference with the light emitted from the projector, giving you a crisper image!

Avoid Surface Bounce

For the best results and a truly impressive projection, be sure to keep lights from bouncing off the projection surface. It makes a big difference!

Use Cool Lighting Hues

Blue and purple hues are ideal for projection. They enhance visibility and clarity, unlike amber tones, which can quickly wash out the image.

Timing is Everything

Starting with the projections before bringing your lights to full intensity helps create a more impactful and immersive scene for your audience.

Using Spotlights

Keep spotlights downstage and have your cast step into the light rather than shining it directly at them. This reduces wash-out and improves visibility.
